HCs Lead The Way
The Lead-Up to a CFC Replacement
In an attempt to address environmental concerns for the protection of the ozone layer, manufacturers developed HFC chemical refrigerants as a replacement for CFC's.
As these original HFC gases were found to be ineffective in many refrigeration applications, it then became necessary to create a large number of HFC/HCFC combinations and other blends.
HCs Lead The Way
The Lead-Up to a CFC Replacement page 2
In general, HFC refrigerants were found to be a poor substitue for CFC refrigerants as it became apparent that extensive modifications to existing systems would be necessary. This costly exercise was called retro-fitting. Furthermore, HFC's were found to be poor performers under extreme conditions.
The importance of hydrocarbon refrigerants had been extolled by Greenpeace under the name "Greenfreeze technology" for at least ten years.
As a result, in 1991, Foron, a minor German manufacturer of refrigerators, announced that they would develop a refrigerator using hydrocarbon-based refrigerants and foam expansion.
This development was actively promoted by Greenpeace.
HCs Lead The Way
The Lead-Up to a CFC Replacement page 3
In August 1992, the German mail order company "Neckermann" placed an initial order with Foron for 20,000 Greenfreeze refrigerators. By the end of August the quantity on order exceeded 50,000 units.
By the end of 1993, after enthusiastic acceptance of Foron "Greenfreeze technology" at Europes most important homewares exhibition, most of Germany's major refrigerator manufacturers announced that their production lines would adopt hydrocarbon technology as a matter of urgency.
By 1996, almost 100% of refrigerators made for the German market were designed to utilise "Greenfreeze technology".
Our Environment
In 1989, in an effort to reduce the impact of CFC gases on the environment, and to comply with the terms of the Montreal Protocol, governments of most countries passed laws to ban the import or manufacture of CFC's.
However, it has been found that many blends of refrigerant gases originally designed to replace CFC's have a high Global Warming Potential (GWP), and, as such, have now been identified as in need of urgent replacement by more environmentally friendly alternatives.
In the early 1990's, the environmental action group Greenpeace launched a large-scale public relations campaign designed to create consumer awareness and convince industry to accept the reality of CFC-free Greenfreeze technology.
Our Environment page 2
Greenpeace efforts have been rewarded by a major change in industrial direction. For example, in 2000 the Coca Cola Corporation announced adoption of natural and environmentally friendly refrigerants, and foam technology. World-wide, Coca Cola is the largest owner of refrigerated equipment, with 16 million "Coke" Cabinets and refrigerators in the world.
Lever Group made a similar announcement in 2000. Lever is arguably the worlds biggest distributor of ice cream and other frozen foods.
Fosters Brewing Group made an announcement in 2000 that the company would seek to adopt environmentally safe refrigeration technology.
Refer to http://www.greenchill.org/ for further details.
Our Environment page 3
Hydrocarbon based gases are one of the few refrigerants that continue to be acceptable for their long-term environmental benefits.
The ready availability of inexpensive hydrocarbon refrigerants, makes it simply illogical for any party to claim that expensive chemical refrigerants, with their high global warming potential are viable replacements for CFC's.
Hydrocarbon refrigerant gases are widely supported and used in the UK and Europe, under the banner of "Greenfreeze Technology".
Greenpeace have also had a major influence on many European manufacturers of commercial and domestic refrigerators, since 1994, have changed to hydrocarbon technology.
Our Environment page 4
Every year, approximately 8.2 million hydrocarbon-based refrigerators are produced in Europe; each using around 30 percent less energy than refrigerators using fluorocarbon refrigerants.
In China, hydrocarbon-based refrigerants are specified by three of the four largest fridge manufacturers.
Overall, there is increasing worldwide acceptance of hydrocarbon based refrigerants. HyChill Australia have developed a range of hydrocarbon products that have high performance levels, are reliable and friendly to the environment.
The Case For Hydrocarbons
As the urgent need to reduce global warming and energy consumption continues, HyChill has been proactive in the development of products that eliminate CFC damage to the ozone layer.
Created by nature, not by a chemical company, hydrocarbons cannot be patented, keeping them affordable and available to everyone. They have an atmospheric life of less than one year, with no effect on the ozone layer, and contribute virtually nothing to global warming.
Hydrocarbon refrigerants boast many important qualities that make them an extremely efficient and reliable choice for most air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

The Case For Hydrocarbons
Increased Safety
Most importantly, the safety of hydrocarbon refrigerants is assured when the application complies with relevant safety standards, such as International Standards ISO 5149, BS 4434-1995, and Australia/New Zealand Standard AS 1677-1998.
The Case For Hydrocarbons
Less Energy Use
Refrigeration or car air-conditioning systems utilising hydrocarbon refrigerant require less energy than systems using fluorocarbon refrigerants.
This provides a number of important benefits:
Compressor loads are reduced, which reduces wear, extending component life, and reducing leakage.
Operating costs are lower.
Less energy consumed means less fossil fuels burned resulting in lower global warming.
The Case For Hydrocarbons
Research
Hydrocarbon refrigerants have been the subject of detailed studies by many organisations including:
Minus 40 Refrigeration Consultants & Design Engineers
INFRAS - Chennai, Pondicherri, India
Swiss Contact S.M.E.P. - Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka
Greenchill Technology Association
Statutory authorities
Arthur D Little - Risk Assessment Study Engineers
Granherne P/L - Risk Assessment Study Engineers
These organisations, support the continuing growth in the use of hydrocarbon refrigerants.
Scientific papers published by various organisations in Australia and overseas, repeatedly attest to the efficiency and safety of hydrocarbon refrigerants across a wide range of applications. These studies can be viewed in the Technical Info site.

The Case For Hydrocarbons
Great Heat Conductors
Hydrocarbons are also 50% more efficient conductors of heat than fluorocarbons.
In practical terms this means that the hydrocarbon molecule rejects heat 50% faster than a fluorocarbon molecule.
In a practical example, a refrigerated drink cabinet that uses hydrocarbon refrigerant can chill cans in under 2 hours, a time saving of almost 30% compared with fluorocarbon refrigerants.
The Case For Hydrocarbons
Use Less Gas
HyChill hydrocarbon refrigerants have a unique advantage:
Each kilogram of hydrocarbon refrigerant replaces 3 kilograms of fluorocarbon refrigerant.

HR12
HR12 is a blend of R600a and R290, two naturally occurring hydrocarbon refrigerant gases and is perfect for use in automotive air-conditioning systems and in refrigeration applications.
HyChill HR12 is derived from a uniquely pure natural gas source, and manufactured to the strictest quality controls.
HR12 is efficient and safe to use, requiring no modification to air conditioning systems and minimal modification to most refrigeration systems.
HyChill HR12 ensures exceptional energy efficiency, dispersing heat much more effectively than fluorocarbon equivalents.
Substantial cost savings for long term operation are achievable by replacing fluorocarbon refrigerants with HR12.
Products
HR12 Safety
Working safely with HyChill hydrocarbon refrigerant requires no more than basic common sense.
In plain terms, hydrocarbon refrigerant is safe for both refrigeration and air conditioning use. However, like petrol, solvents, and other commonly used volatile products, hydrocarbon refrigerant is flammable, and therefore should not be released in the presence of an ignition source. Its auto-ignition temperature is between 460°C and 470°C.
Evidence supporting the safety of hydrocarbon refrigerant includes exhaustive testing carried out by Dr Ian Maclaine-cross and Professor Eddie Leonardi, from the School of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering at the University of NSW. This is further supported by years of safe use in Europe.
HyChill hydrocarbon refrigerants have a distinctive "rotting cabbage" odour added to it so that any leak can be immediately identified for rectification.
Products
HR12 No Need to Retro-Fit
Hydrocarbon refrigerants are the ideal direct replacements for CFC and other fluorocarbon refrigerants. Unlike other CFC alternatives, you don't have to retro-fit or redesign any part of an existing air conditioning or refrigeration system. They are fully compatible with most air conditioning systems, including valves and oils, both mineral and synthetic.
Assuming an existing CFC or HFC system is in sound working order, conversion to a system using hydrocarbon refrigerant involves nothing more complicated or costly than a regular service procedure.
Workshops can use all their existing tools and equipment, and don't have to worry about retraining their technicians. With HyChill hydrocarbon refrigerants, you don't change anything other than usual service items.
Products
HR22
On a hot day, the air conditioner is the biggest consumer of power in a building. By switching to HR22/502, power bills can be dramatically reduced, and the wear and tear on the air conditioning system can also be minimised.
HyChill HR22/502 is the Natural Organic solution for low temperature refrigeration and air-conditioning systems previously charged with HCFC R22 or CFC R502.
HR22/502 is a direct replacement, which means no new parts or equipment (retro-fitting) are required when changing refrigerant gases other than general service items.
An air conditioner or refrigeration system charged with HR22/502 uses up to 20% less power than HCFC-based refrigerants. Because hydrocarbon refrigerant is more efficient, it can cool a room down to the temperature set by the thermostat in less time. In hot weather, this can result in substantial energy savings.
